TANTRA AND THE DIVINE FEMININE

As part of the Goddess or Tantra Teacher training, both Sri Devanayagi and Shri Param Eswaran will share with woman the secret of being a Divine Goddess, and man, how to serve his beloved Goddess.

Male and Female as ONE.

Throughout all planes of existence manifestation take two aspect, Feminine and Masculine, representing nature’s positive and negative forces. In the plain of consciousness there are two aspect. Consciousness and eternal consciousness, and thus also spirit and matter, night and day, signify the dual aspect on all planes. In the highest form of manifestation of Feminine and Masculine is Man and Woman.

In this woman is created finer and more capable of divine knowledge, and is more spiritual minded. Man is into thinking, while woman tendency is towards the world. These tendencies result in balance. There for man needs woman to direct their life, woman needs man for her guidance and protection, both being incomplete in themselves.

The problem of the emancipation of woman may be studies by comparison of her position in the East and the West. A cultured Eastern woman, whose freedom may seem restricted, is a better wife and mother, and yet beneficial to the Nation. When I say seem restricted, is self imposed as she sees her role as a builder of Nation, rather then building a Nation. The eastern woman who uses complete freedom is less anxious for and less capable to manage the family, but being out in the world, trying to use her influence to promote the advancement of the Nation, instead of the advancement of the next generation.

At first sight it would appear that woman is more respected by man in the West, but in reality the East gives her greater reverence, for she is the Goddess of the home, she who directs the life of the present and future generation. Throughout time, man has enjoyed again what seem as freedom than woman, in the west or the east because he has more strength and physical power; and the fineness of woman need protection, just as the eye, has been protected by nature with eyelids.

Love and wisdom create harmony between man and woman; but these being absent, harmony ceases to exist. Ardh-narishwara, hermaphroditic deity incorporating male (Shiva) and female (Shakti) qualities, symbolic of the bipolarity of the human body. In Tantra, the right side of the body considered male and the left side female. This is true for both men and women. Love can only exist, when one connects with one’s soul, and then realize the God (male), Goddess (female) within. Men’s fascination with women as a source of life, has been known from the beginning of time, yet men in modern society, due to his rushed life have forget the art of worshiping a woman as his Goddess, for his betterment. Woman on the other hand are busy to make their mark in the world, have forget that they are the life giving essence, the same essence as the Great Goddess of Creation, Para-Sakthi.

A child who represents the future generation inherits more attributes from its mother than from the father, therefore the mother is more responsible for its merits and defects. If she has the knowledge, she can train the soul of her child even before its birth by the power of her being, molding the child’s future according to the will of soul, preventing the soul from being consumed by the world. As part of the Goddess or Tantra Teacher training, we share with woman the secret of motherhood, and man how to serve his beloved Goddess. As human beings are born with worshiping attribute, and as all attributes demands satisfaction by expression, so the attribute finds it object of adoration. The ancient Tantric worshipped both aspect of manifestation in the names of gods and goddess, both above, and at home, man and woman, as god and goddess.

Harmony between finer persons is more lasting than the affections of average being.

It is time for both woman and man seriously re-evaluate the position of women in contemporary societies. In the early times there has been a society based around a Goddess Religion. Society of the time was peaceful, agrarian lifestyle.

This society was populated my matriarchies based on the worship of a single, universal goddess which lasted for several millennia until it was gradually eroded from the 4th millennium BC onwards by a series of major invasions by the so-called Indo-Europeans. The Goddess continued to command worship in many cultures, but in a less powerful and unified form. After the advent of Christianity, the Goddess is believed to have survived through out Europe in Wicca-style religion, despite persecution during the witch-hunts of the Reformation. In spite of all the invasions and advent Christianity, Tantra and Vedanta has survived, and growing stronger in most parts of the world.

To create a strife-free ecologically conscious world, and to avert catastrophe, women have to reestablish the place in society, and Goddess worship must spread. The vision of IFC Temple is built in the hope of bringing women together and to inspire them to create a less materialistic society where people can co-exist peacefully. Maha Vidya teachings can help all establish a gynocentric ethos, in which woman is the bringer of life and nourishment, society and the earth are seen as a unified whole, and the general good is more important than the individual will.

In India where traditions of Goddess worship been unbroken for millennia, women are rarely accorded the status that would seem to be commensurate with the adulation of the Divine Feminine this was from the Vedic period. The first mention of the Goddess as a supreme being occurs in the 5th century AD, due to the popularity of Goddess worship amongst the Tantric.

Through out the world, numerous traditions of Goddess worship have flourished unbroken to the present date. The female divinity is popularly worshiped as Kali throughout India. The Great Goddess Devi incarnates in many different forms across Southeast Asia and in Tibet. In Oceania, Australia, and Africa, various groups continue to worship the Goddess despite the evangelical efforts of Christian missionaries, Catholic countries, especially in South America, worship the female divinity in disguised forms, as saints and in the shape of the Virgin Mary.

The gender imbalance is still glaringly obvious in modern society. Since the post war re-industrialization and a growing materialism in society alienated an increasing number of people who were looking for a spiritual alternative to technological progress. The Goddess provided the alternative, offered not only the liberty to choose a different style of worship, but also human being as part of Nature.

In all of this one important element is missing, when woman will realize that she is a Goddess worthy of worship, as she too is part of the Great Goddess, thus making her worthy of being worshiped. Being born a female does not make her worthy of being worshiped, but being a true Goddess, fully realizing the importance of motherhood.

The important of the Goddess as a symbol of motherhood has to be felt and understood. All being ever been born or ever to be born will experience its mother as “numinous” (suffused with a feeling of Divinity). A women’s love must be absolutely free from selfishness, otherwise it does not produce proper motherhood, as the mother influences the future generation. If the fire has no flame it cannot give light, and smoke comes out of it, which is troublesome for the future generation. Such is selfish love.
